INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY GUWAHATI (IIT-G)

Indian institute of technology ,Guwahati ,the sixth member of the IIT fraternity , was established in 1994 by the act of parliament for providing scientific and technological education across the country .The academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995. Since then ,it continues to develop and diversify each year by improving standards in technological education , research and industrial consultancy . The Institute pioneered the department of design by introducing design as discipline at undergraduate level.

LOCATION:

IIT Guwahati is located on the outskirts of the city Guwahati . The city lies in the heart of Assam , one of the most beautiful regions of the India . The region provides a rich combination of greenery , scenic beauty ,flora & fauna and the cultural treasures of the people that inhabit it. The institute is well connected to other parts of the country by road,rail or air. There are direct air services from/to Mumbai, New delhi, Kolkata with connectivity to all major cities in the country and direct train services from/to all metropolis and major cities. It is around 20 kms from the heart of the city and 40 mins drive from airport.

IIT G CAMPUS:

IIT Guwahati’s campus is on sprawling 285 hectares plot of land on north bank of the river Brahmaputra . With the Brahmaputra on one side and with hills and vast open spaces on others, the campus is richly stacked with a wide variety of flora and fauna and thus provide an ideal setting for learning.

The campus is broadly spread across the following zones:

Student Hostels
Residential Quarter for Staff and Faculty
Academic Complex
Sports and Recreational Complex
Commercial Complex

The students are provided with hostel room in the campus. These hostels are named after river and tributaries of North East India: Manas, Dihing, Kapili,Siang, Kameng, Barak, Subansiri, Umiam, Dibang and Brahmaputra, which is biggest among the all presently with boarder strength of 1140. All hostels have the basic amenities like mess, canteen, lounge, campus wide LAN, Internet access etc.

The 74,000 sqm Academic Complex houses the academic department, centers for research , Laboratories, and Classrooms. There is an administrative building that accommodates all the offices of the institute .The Institute has a computer and communication center that is well equipped with the latest technologies . Each lecture hall complex comprises of 4 lecture halls, each with the latest technologies. Each lecture hall complex comprises of 4 Lecture halls,each with a capacity of 250 and an auditorium with a capacity of 1500 that provides ample space for teaching and conducting various events/programmes.

The Sports complex comprises of an indoor sports stadium with synthetic badminton, table tennis and squash courts , gymnasium, the students gymkhana office , an 8 lane 50m long swimming pool and floor lit playing fields for all major outdoor games that provides ample scope of recreation for the campus residents .Other facilities at the campus include the commercial complex which acts as a shopping centre for residents. Tere are guest houses for faculties and guardians of students. The institute also provides medical facilities to the staff and students through the 30 bedded Institute Hospital located within the campus. The campus has a central library with a collection of over 1,17,000 books including 2605 subscribed online journals and magazines.

The institute also encourages several student activities apart from the regular curriculum. The IIT-G student gymkhana council is a powerful and a political students organization between students and administration. The Gymkhana club promotes the objective of fostering extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, welfare of students and their stay at the campus. It comprises of five boards viz. Cultural board, Sports board ,Technical board, Students Welfare board and Hostels’ Affairs board. The Institute serves host to various seminars and conferences conducted by marvels in different departments. Then we have the in house publication like “Reminiscence”:The official news letter of IIT-G which features students’ achievements and covers all important campus activities.

ACADEMICS:

The Academics activities of IIT-Guwahati began in 1995 with BTech Programme im three departments – Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering & Mechanical Engineering. At present institute has 11 departmentsand 6 academic centers with responsibility of teaching and research which are offering BTech, Bdes, MA in development studies, MSc ,MTech, MDes, Dual degree (Mtech+PhD) and PhD programmes.
